A multifuel biomass boiler burns several fuels in the same combustion chamber — pellets, logs, chips. In 2026, European pellet prices stay tied to the wood market, so they swing. Switching to logs or local chips when pellets spike turns your boiler room into a heating-cost hedge.
For an architect or project owner, that flexibility is decided at APS stage: silo sizing, delivery access, mechanical-room layout. It all happens before the building permit.

Pellets, logs or chips: which fuel for a Luxembourg project?
Pellets stay the simplest fuel: full automation, stable pricing, Klimabonus-eligible. Logs cost less per kWh but require manual loading, a large store and operator time. Chips make sense close to a local forestry resource.
A multifuel boiler delays the choice — start on pellets (comfort + aid), then enable logs or chips as backup when the context allows.

Three APS reflexes to bake flexibility into the design
Reflex 1: size the buffer tank for the most demanding fuel (usually logs, ~1 to 2 L/kW). That is also the condition to capture the +15% Klimabonus bonus. Reflex 2: pellet silo with blower-truck access, plus a separate zone for logs and chips. Reflex 3: mechanical room with ventilation, flueing and fire-service access per EN 303-5.
Check EcoDesign (EU 2015/1189) and EN 303-5 Class 5 before selection — those are the minimum thresholds for any 2026 new build.

Klimabonus 2026: what Luxembourg actually funds
In Luxembourg, only the pellet boiler is Klimabonus-eligible — not logs, not chips. Up to €8,000 in a single-family home (€4,000 without replacement of an old system), €6,000 per dwelling in multi-unit (cap €40,000) and €6,000 in district heating (cap €24,000). The +15% bonus applies with a buffer tank; +€1,000 flat with solar thermal coupled.
Municipal aids are variable and stackable — some communes offer nothing. Check eligibility on the official Klima-Agence simulator before APS.
