Sizing, seasonal efficiency, silo and maintenance access: the practical checklist to fit a pellet boiler into a new BBC or passive project in Luxembourg.
How many kW for a BBC or passive project?
In a BBC or passive project, heating demand usually sits between 15 and 30 kWh/m²/year. For a well-insulated 150 m² home, you rarely need more than 4–5 kW of nominal output.
Golden rule: target 80–100% of the need at Luxembourg's design temperature (-7 to -8 °C). Oversizing leads to short cycles, faster fouling and lower seasonal efficiency.
- Add the thermal balance and heat-loss calculation (W/m²) to the APS dossier.
- Validate the sizing via Klima-Agence before locking the model.
Seasonal efficiency: the metric that really matters
Nominal output says little about year-round performance. EU Regulation 2015/1189 requires a seasonal efficiency (ηs) of at least 90% for class 5 biomass boilers.
Pick an ENplus-compatible unit and ask the manufacturer for the ηs datasheet. A 5-point drop in ηs means 5–10% more pellets burned over 10 years.
- Condensing pellet boilers reach the highest ηs on the market.
- Never sign the quote without ηs written down in figures.
Silo, buffer tank and access: lock it in at APS
Size the silo at 1.5 m³ per tonne of annual consumption. For 2 t/year (typical 150 m² BBC home), allow at least 3 m³ of usable volume.
The buffer tank must hold at least 20 L/kW (300 L for a 15 kW boiler). It smooths cycles, extends service life and unlocks the +15% Klimabonus bonus.
- Suction line: Ø 60–80 mm, length ≤ 15 m, max 2 bends.
- Mechanical room must be ventilated; fire-rated door if the silo sits inside.
- Keep silo-to-boiler distance ≤ 6 m for reliable suction.
Maintenance: what the owner expects from the architect
Manufacturer standard: 1–2 service visits per year, plus 2–4 ash removals. Average budget: €250–400/year depending on the contract.
From day one, plan an accessible flue outlet, a dedicated electrical line and a water point nearby. Service stays quick and the bill stays predictable.
- Place the ash drawer right next to the technical-room door.
- A flue inspection hatch avoids breaking walls open later.
