New-build heating carbon balance: why biomass outperforms oil and gas

Factual comparison for architects and project owners: carbon cycle, EcoDesign rules, Klimabonus 2026, and early-design levers.

Why carbon balance locks in the energy choice at concept stage

A new build commits its emissions for decades. The energy vector decides whether the envelope can be operated carbon-neutrally. Biomass relies on a short cycle: trees absorb CO₂ while growing, combustion releases it back. Oil and gas, by contrast, inject geological carbon sequestered for millions of years into the atmosphere.

The critical decision in the APS phase is not just the technology but the system integration: silo access, buffer volume, hydraulic balancing. Anticipating these secures savings and subsidy eligibility.

How does the carbon cycle differentiate pellets from heating oil?

Pellets (ENplus A1 certified) come from sawmill residues or sustainably managed forests. Their combustion returns only the CO₂ captured during growth — the cycle closes within decades. Heating oil and gas transfer fossil carbon irreversibly.

Fuel quality guarantees clean combustion: ENplus A1 mandates moisture ≤ 10 %, ash ≤ 0.7 %, and NCV ≥ 4.6 kWh/kg. This protects the boiler, lowers emissions, and meets subsidy conditions.

What regulations require for a high-performance biomass boiler

EcoDesign Regulation 2015/1189 requires pellet boilers to reach a minimum seasonal efficiency of 75 % (≤ 20 kW) or 77 % (> 20 kW) and caps particulate matter, CO, OGC and NOx. EN 303-5 class 5 defines the test basis.

Klimabonus 2026 tightens these thresholds: dust ≤ 8 mg/m³, NOx ≤ 200 mg/m³, useful efficiency ≥ 90 %. The unit must feature automatic feed and ignition. A 30 l/kW buffer tank adds a +15 % bonus, solar thermal a flat +1 000 €.

Three levers to pull at concept stage to de-risk the project

1. Size a 30 l/kW buffer tank: it unlocks the prime top-up, cuts short-cycling and extends boiler life. 2. Lay out silo access (delivery, suction pipe or auger) short and obstacle-free from ground floor or basement. 3. Request the energy study and boiler quote early to lock hydraulics (bivalence, solar, heat pump) before structural work starts.

  • 30 l/kW buffer volume for prime bonus and stable operation
  • Ground-floor or basement silo access without tight turns
  • Multi-generator hydraulic balancing before commissioning
