Pellet boiler in a passive house: how to size it right from day one
Sizing a pellet boiler for a passive house in Luxembourg: kW rating, silo and buffer tank integration, plus 2026 Klimabonus in one practical guide.
What kW rating for a passive house or BBC build?
A passive house drops heat demand to 15-25 kWh/m²/year. For 150 m² well insulated, that's roughly 4 000 kWh/year, or about 700 kg of pellets per season.
A modern 6-10 kW pellet boiler easily covers this load. Oversizing hurts seasonal efficiency: short cycles, soot build-up, higher fuel use.
- BBC (≤ 50 kWh/m²/year): 8-12 kW for 120-180 m².
- Passive (≤ 15 kWh/m²/year): 6-10 kW for 120-200 m².
- Require a 1:3 modulation range minimum to avoid ON/OFF cycling.
How to integrate silo and buffer tank at design stage?
Silo and buffer tank belong in the early concept (APS), not on site. A 500-800 L buffer needs 2 m ceiling clearance and a 60 cm access hatch for future replacement.
For a full heating season (3-4 tonnes), plan 4-6 m³ of silo volume. Provide a 100 mm fill pipe reachable by the blower truck, a dry and ventilated room, and an auger or vacuum feed to the boiler.
- Silo footprint: 4-6 m³ for a single-family home, roughly 6 m² of floor area.
- Silo-to-boiler distance: ≤ 15 m to limit pressure losses.
- Plant room: 2.2 m ceiling, 80 cm door, low and high ventilation.
What seasonal efficiency should you target?
The nominal rating (90-95%) looks great on paper but rarely reflects the full heating season. Seasonal efficiency depends on modulation, pellet quality, and maintenance.
EN 303-5 Class 5 and EU Regulation 2015/1189 (EcoDesign) set the minimums: efficiency ≥ 87% at full load, standby losses ≤ 80 W. Ask the manufacturer for the EcoDesign fiche.
- Insist on ENplus A1 pellets (6 mm diameter, moisture < 10%).
- Annual service: ash removal, heat exchanger cleaning, auger check.
- With regular maintenance, service life exceeds 20 years.
Cost and subsidies in Luxembourg?
The cost of a complete pellet installation (boiler, silo, buffer tank, fitting) depends on sizing and the plant room layout.
Klimabonus 2026 covers a significant share: up to €8,000 for a single-family home, +15% with a buffer tank, +€1,000 with solar thermal. Some communes add their own grant — check the Klima-Agence simulator.
- Klimabonus 2026: up to €8,000 (single-family); €6,000/dwelling in multi-family (cap €40,000).
- Buffer tank bonus: +15% of the aid.
- Municipal grants: variable, stackable with Klimabonus.
