Multifuel biomass boiler in Luxembourg: what architects lock in at preliminary design

Log + pellet bivalence, solar thermal coupling and buffer tank: actionable checklist for architects and project owners planning rural new-build or renovation heating.

Why specify a multifuel boiler at preliminary design stage?

On a Luxembourg rural home, the real question is not "pellets or logs?" but "how much autonomy does the client need?" A multifuel boiler — such as the Kalorina LE-PA Cippato — shares one heat exchanger across two modes: logs for the cheapest kWh, pellets for weekends away or automatic modulation.

This bivalence hedges against price volatility: if pellet prices spike in winter, local firewood remains an option. The architect must decide at preliminary design — storage, silo and pipework cannot be added cleanly later.

Logs + pellets: what to reserve on the drawings?

The plant room needs adequate ceiling height (flue draft, servicing), a load-bearing base for the silo and direct access for pellet delivery. Plan 4–6 tonnes of silo capacity for a full season without manual refuelling.

  • Log store: 12–18 m² covered, 2–3 m from the boiler — not in the garage (fire risk)
  • Silo: 45° hopper or flexible auger, max. 6 m horizontal run, pneumatic truck access
  • Buffer tank: 50 L/kW minimum (EN 303-5), 75–100 L/kW recommended for log operation
  • Compliance: EN 303-5 Class 5 + EcoDesign Regulation 2015/1189 — baseline for any serious specification

Solar thermal on the same heat exchanger: how to wire the grant file?

Solar covers DHW in summer and offloads the boiler. The buffer tank is the common hub: solar, biomass and emitters share one vessel. Without a buffer on the plans, the client loses the +15% Klimabonus buffer bonus and the +€1,000 solar flat rate.

Lock in at preliminary design: space for 4–8 m² of collectors (south-south-east), pipe runs to the buffer, condensate management. Coupling works with all Tatano forced- or natural-circulation solar systems.

Klimabonus 2026: which grant applies to which operating mode?

Non-negotiable: in Luxembourg, only pellet boilers qualify for Klimabonus — never log-only operation. A multifuel installation qualifies when the pellet function is active and Class 5 certified.

  • Single-family home: up to €8,000 (€4,000 without replacing an existing installation)
  • District heating: €6,000, cap €24,000
  • Buffer bonus: +15% on the main grant
  • Solar thermal bonus: +€1,000 flat rate
  • Municipal top-ups: variable, stackable — check at aides.klima-agence.lu
