Why should silo and buffer tank shape the plan from day one?
The silo and buffer tank dictate the plant room, not the other way around. For a 120–200 m² new build, plan 3–6 m³ of silo and 500–1,000 L of buffer.
Skip this at the early design stage and you pay later: hoppers to resize, access corridors to break open, clearances to rebuild. Lock them on the mass plan from the first meeting.
- Reserve 1.2–1.5× the silo working volume for sloped walls.
- Inspection hatch 60 × 60 cm right next to the silo.
- Truck access corridor: 1.5 m minimum for the delivery hose.
Pellet silo: size, access, logistics
ENplus pellets (Ø 6 or 8 mm, ash < 0.5 %) ensure smooth suction and cut maintenance. Make it a contractual requirement, no exceptions.
Keep the suction line under 6 m with 1–2 bends max. Each bend effectively removes 1–2 m of reach.

EN 303-5 and the EcoDesign Regulation 2015/1189 set emission limits. The buffer helps meet them across the whole heating season.
- 500 L buffer up to 15 kW, 1,000 L for 20–30 kW.
- Paired with solar thermal, the buffer also absorbs summer peaks.
- Sensor well, thermometer and pocket must be planned in advance.
Maintenance, standards and Klimabonus 2026 levers
Maintenance access is an architect's call: ash bin, chimney access and 60–80 cm of clearance in front of the boiler. Block it now and the client pays for years.
Klimabonus 2026 covers pellet boilers only — not logs, not wood chips. Up to €8,000 for a single-family home, €6,000 per dwelling in multi-family housing (capped at €40,000).
