Combining pellets and solar thermal: the early-stage method to secure a biomass project in Luxembourg

Pellet boiler + solar thermal on a single heat generator: how to trigger the Klimabonus 2026 bonus (+€1,000) from concept design onwards.

Updated 20 August 2026·4 min read

Why pair a pellet boiler with solar thermal?

Wood-fuel prices swing with the seasons; pellets can move more than 15% in a single year. Solar heat is free at point of use and stabilises the energy bill over 20 years.

Designed at APS stage, the coupling on a single buffer tank removes the need for a second heat generator, a second control loop and extra floor space in the plant room.

  • One generator, one hydraulic circuit, one controller
  • One buffer tank covering heating and domestic hot water
  • Solar collectors providing shoulder-season backup

Klimabonus 2026: what the coupling really changes

Base aid reaches up to €8,000 for a single-family home when an old system is replaced. Adding solar thermal triggers a €1,000 flat bonus; a buffer tank adds +15% to the grant.

Crucial point: in Luxembourg, only wood-pellet boilers are eligible. Logs and wood chips do not qualify. Official source: guichet.public.lu.

  • €8,000 with replacement / €4,000 without
  • +€1,000 solar bonus (flat amount)
  • +15% buffer-tank bonus
  • No aid for logs or wood chips

Three early-stage reflexes for a viable project

The buffer tank becomes the heart of the system. Rightsizing sits between 20 and 30 L per kW, with at least 800 L once a solar loop is included.

  • Size the tank BEFORE laying out the plant room, not after
  • Allow 5 to 8 m² of solar collectors per occupant (DHW + heating backup)
  • Ceiling height ≥ 2.30 m in the plant room
  • One hydraulic circuit with one bi-energy controller

EcoDesign, EN 303-5, ENplus: what makes the file approvable

Every Klimabonus file requires compliance with EcoDesign 2015/1189 and EN 303-5 Class 5. That is the technical baseline, not an optional add-on.

  • Quote EU regulation 2015/1189 in the technical note
  • Specify EN 303-5 Class 5 for the pellet boiler
  • Require ENplus-certified pellets in the supply contract
  • Run the aid simulation on aides.klima-agence.lu before submission
