Pellet silo and buffer tank: plan them at schematic design in Luxembourg
Designing the biomass boiler room from day one: silo sizing, buffer tank, Klimabonus 2026 eligibility. A concise guide for architects.
Why size the silo and buffer tank at schematic design stage?
For a new low-energy or passive project, the biomass boiler room must be planned from the first sketch — not after the building permit is filed. The required volumes (silo, buffer tank, technical room) must show up on the architectural plans before review.
Klimabonus 2026 rewards this foresight: +15% premium with a buffer tank and +€1,000 with solar thermal, provided the equipment is listed in the binding quote (guichet.public.lu).
- Typical heat load in a passive house: 5-10 kW.
- A 4-6 tonne pellet stock ≈ one year of autonomy for a single-family project.
- ENplus-certified pellets keep calorific value and quality consistent (enplus-pellets.eu).
How much volume for the pellet silo?
One tonne of pellets occupies 1.5-1.7 m³. Plan 4-6 m³ for a single-family low-energy project, 15-25 m³ for a 10-dwelling multi-family building. The silo must stay dry, ventilated, ideally adjacent to the boiler room.
- Blower-truck inlet: Ø 100 mm access, ≤ 8 m vertical lift.
- Suction line: ≤ 20 m run, ≤ 6 m lift, ≤ 2 bends.
- Recommended silo-to-boiler distance: ≤ 6 m.
- Use inert, moisture-tight materials.
What the buffer tank really changes
The buffer tank smooths boiler cycles and secures the seasonal efficiency required by EN 303-5 Class 5. Without it, soot and corrosion speed up maintenance.
- Sizing rule: 20-30 L per kW → 500-1,000 L for a typical low-energy project.
- Keep flow/return ≤ 65 °C to stay in condensing mode.
- Compatible with solar thermal as a shared storage.
- Triggers the +15% Klimabonus bonus (guichet.public.lu).
Biomass boiler room checklist for the architect
Critical room constraints must be locked at sketch stage: soundproofing, high/low ventilation, maintenance clearance, and ash drawer access.
- Maintenance clearance: ≥ 80 cm in front of the boiler.
- Silo-to-boiler: ≤ 6 m, ≤ 2 bends.
- Plan ash drawer and flue routing early.
- Validate the hydraulic schematic with the engineering consultant.
- Annual service: 1-2 h, maintenance contract recommended (ADEME).
